This website is dedicated primarily to the giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), which is also known as the sierra redwood. Our experimentation and observations of the giant sequoias in the wild as well as in the nursery and landscape garden for nearly 30 years has helped to dispel myths with regard to the giant sequoia species. Covering the span of undergrowth to old-growth trees, over species of plant life are native to British temperate rain forests, coastal regions, mountainous zones, and an area of arid plateau are each adorned in differing styles. Because of the geographic sprawl found in BC, there are vast differences found in every direction.

During the first 15 weeks of the growing cycle in a container nursery with travelling-boom irrigation, nearly 60% of the water and 50% of the nitrogen were discharged from the facility. The American Conifer Society classifies dwarf conifers as those growing one to six inches ( to 15 cm) a year with a size at 10 years of one to six feet (30 to cm), vertically or horizontally, depending on habit.

Soil Biology Books. Author(s): The University of British Columbia. NA Pages. What is the soil made of, more about the clay, what lime does to clay, some experiments with the sand, the plant food in the soil, the dwellers in the soil, the soil and the plant, cultivation and tillage, the soil and the countryside, how soil has been made. Seeding densities, fertilizer use, season of seeding, and the interaction of these treatments were tested using native plants on degraded sites in northern British Columbia, Canada.

A factorial fertilizer test with nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertilizers at Skimikin nursery showed that nutrient additions for satisfactory growth of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl.) should be 90 kg N, kg P (applied before sowing), and 40 kg K per ha during the first year.

Recommended fertilizer applications for a 2-year nursery rotation range from to kg of nitrogen, 67 to kg of phosphorus, and 75 to kg of potassium per ha. Recommended nutrient levels in both soils and seedlings are tabulated and some effects of nutrients on seedling growth and physiology by: Effect of late season top dressings of N and K applied to conifer transplants in the nursery on their survival and growth of British forest sites.

Fertilization research has confirmed that nitrogen (N) deficiencies are widespread in B.C. forests, and that N additions often have a substantial positive effect on tree and stand growth. Other nutrient deficiencies, either induced or aggravated by N fertilization, have also been implicated as growth-limiting factors, especially in interior.
